窓際のヴァイオリン弾き

東京都美術館でアンリ・マティスの作品展は２回鑑賞したが、いちばん心に残ったのは、代表作ではないが、1918年春のこの作品。専門家によると、マティス50歳を前にして、画境に大きな変化が予感されるとのこと。

難しい事は分からないが、見た途端にストーリーが心に湧いてきた。

はるか海上(南仏ニースらしい)、赤い空に白い雲が躍動している。マティスの作品に頻出する「窓」べで、ひとりのバイオリン弾きが何かを奏でているようだが、よく見ると彼の頭から外が透けている。

つまり、彼は実在しない。

バルコニーも左右不対象で、体の右側面はやはり窓外が透けて見える。

とても不思議な作品だが、彼の息子の証言によると、このバイオリン弾きこそは父マティスの自画像なのだという。まるで自分の姿を夢に見ているように見える。

自分を夢で見る体験は、かなり深刻な精神的危機を表現しているのかも知れない。

I went to Henri Matisse’s painting exhibition in Ueno, Tokyo twice. The painting that left the deepest impression on me was “The Violinist by the Window”.

I was so moved that I couldn’t move for a while in front of the painting.

According to experts, the “window” seems to be an important theme for Matisse. In the picture, white clouds are moving in the red sky. However, if you look closely, you can see the scenery outside the window through the side of his head and body.

So he doesn’t exist.

According to the testimony of Matisse’s son, this is Matisse’s self-image, just before he turned 50, he appeared to be in a serious mental crisis.

I imagine that seeing himself in a dream represents a major mental shift.
